I'm sure that MBTA isn't thinking about that anymore. Look at
infrastructure cost rises over the past two decades. Heck, look at what it
cost to build the big dig. Not all of that was graft.

The MBTA operation may be critical infrastructure, but MBTA fare
collection is not. A decade or two ago they even considered the
possibility of abolishing fare collection.
